Collection: Tourmaline
Tourmaline comes in a range of exciting colours (ranging from reds to blues) and is often mistakes for other precious gemstones. The most prized colours are Rubellite (raspberry pink) and Paraiba (cyan blue) Tourmalines.
A Spanish conquistador discovered green tourmaline crystal and confused the vibrant gem with emerald. His confusion lived on until scientists recognised tourmaline as a distinct mineral species in the 1800s.
The supply of tourmaline began to expand during the first half of the twentieth century, when Brazil yielded some large deposits. Then, beginning in the 1950s, additional finds appeared in countries around the world. Madagascar and Afghanistan have produced fine red tourmaline.
Tourmaline is one of the birthstones for October along with opal. Tourmaline is also the gem of the 8th anniversary.
